USC graduate students are invited to apply for the summer 2010 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship. FLAS fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education through its Title VI/NRC grant to the East Asian Studies Center. Summer FLAS awards support graduate students who will be participating in intensive summer language programs, equivalent to one year of study in Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Award Benefits
● $2,500 stipend
● $4,000 maximum tuition payment for approved intensive summer language program
Eligibility
A student is eligible for the fellowship if he or she:
● is a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.;
● is a full-time graduate student engaged in the study of East Asia in any discipline at USC;
● agrees to pursue full-time intensive summer language study at least 6 weeks in length (140 or more contact hours for beginning-intermediate level study, 120 or more contact hours for advanced level study)
Selection Criteria
● Academic performance and potential as evidenced by GRE scores, GPA, class and department ranking, three letters of recommendation (including a language reference), and statement of purpose.
● The level of the planned language study. FLAS fellowships are awarded for intermediate-advanced language study. Beginning language study may be approved if the applicant has already attained fluency in one East Asian language. FLAS awards are not intended for native speakers of the target language.
Additional Information
● Awardees are required to complete an online report at the beginning and end of the award period.
● Awardees will also be required to participate in the Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI) at the beginning and end of the award period. All costs associated with the OPI interviews will be covered by
the USC East Asian Studies Center.
