Kim H. Luu-Ng is an attorney with the Torture Survivors Project at Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA). She represents victims of torture in immigration proceedings, most notably in the areas of asylum and deportation defense. She previously served as a detention attorney with the Legal Orientation Program at San Pedro Detention Center, and subsequently, as pro bono coordinator at Mira Loma Detention Center. Kim received her JD and MA in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh, and graduated with a BA in International Relations from the University of Southern California. Prior to joining LAFLA, Kim was a litigation associate at Reed Smith LLP where she provided pro bono assistance to victims of trafficking.
Information on Internships with the Torture Survivors Project
The Torture Survivors Project (TSP) of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) provides comprehensive immigration legal services to survivors of torture.* These services include: 1. representation in asylum proceedings before US Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS); 2. deportation defense in federal Immigration Court; 3. family reunification petitions - i.e. an asylee wants to bring family to the US after winning asylum; 4. employment authorization - obtaining work permits 5. adjustment of status - helping refugees/asylee survivors of torture obtain legal permanent resident status; 6. naturalization - obtaining citizenship; 7. Social services - case management for victims who need social services; 8. Government benefits - assistance with obtaining government assistance 8. Related work for victims of domestic violence, trafficking, and serious crimes.
In addition to our legal services component, we also do policy advocacy [with local, state, and federal governments] and outreach to the torture survivor community. Some of those communities include the African, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Armenian communities.
I am in need of interns to provide support for the program in all the above areas. Examples of duties would include:
1. Interview clients to document torture and other human rights abuses.

2. Draft declarations/affidavits.
3. Conduct research on country conditions, including human rights and socio/economic/political conditions.
4. Provide language translation support for Vietnamese, Arabic, French, and other languages as needed.
5. Attend and provide attorneys with support in federal court.
6. Assist with and attend outreach events with attorneys.
7. Provide miscellaneous support to attorneys on court filings - i.e. review motions/briefs, gather exhibits, etc.
Interns would receive training in these areas and also have access to trainings on other areas of law. This is great opportunity for students interested in international human rights, international relations, political science, immigration, social services, or law school. Interns will be supervised by attorneys, but because we tend to delegate many responsibilities, we rely on the ability of law clerks and interns to be independent and self-motivated.
