Computers for Youth Ambassadors

Computers for Youth helps low-income children do better in school by improving their learning environment at home.  Through our Family Learning Workshops, local 6th grade students and their parents receive a free desktop computer (we call it a Home Learning Center), educational software, and training on how to use their new Home Learning Center.  At the conclusion of the workshop, families take their Home Learning Centers with them to keep!

We are seeking volunteer “CFY Ambassadors” to guide and connect with families as they explore the educational software and navigate their new Home Learning Centers.  The individualized assistance provided by Ambassadors is critical and ensures each parent and child (a) keeps up with the workshop lessons, (b) has a positive, memorable experience, and (c) goes home understanding how to use their Home Learning Center as a tool for family learning at home.

Since the majority of the families we serve speak Spanish, this would be an excellent opportunity for USC students to exercise their language skills while enriching the community in which they live. However, the languages spoken by our families are varied and include Korean, Cantonese, Tagolog, Farsi, Urdu, Pashto, Russian, and others, so we encourage everyone who’s interested to volunteer, regardless of bilingual skills.
