College Research and Scholarships

SCHOLARSHIPS
SOAR (Student Opportunities for Academic Research)

We would like to encourage more students to participate in research and receive funding through the SOAR program.

One of the College’s initiatives is the Student Opportunities for Academic Research program. We believe that our students will be well served by an opportunity to work directly with a faculty member in a research project.

Here are the basics:

Eligibility
·       SOAR is available to students who have a declared major in the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
·       Full-time enrollment at USC for the entire academic year is required.
·       A USC cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 or higher is required.
Funding Guidelines
·       The amount of the stipend is $1000 towards non-course related research activity.
·       The stipends are not wages, but are to be used for expenses directly related to a research project. This commonly includes research materials, equipment, or equipment rental. The stipend may also be used to fund research-related travel.
·       A detailed budget accounting for all SOAR funding must be submitted with the application.
·       The stipend is a single payment credited to the student’s university account. This may initially affect the student’s financial aid award, but if this happens, alternate arrangements can be made. More information will be provided to the recipient.
·       If the student fails to complete the project successfully or fails to meet research obligations with a professor's project, and a final approval is denied by the student’s faculty sponsor, the funds will be withdrawn and $1000 will be applied to the student’s university account.

STUDY ABROAD

Problems without Passports (PWP)
Most, if not all, of the societal problems or challenges we face are transnational or global in nature.  These problems like global climate change, pandemics or the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction are global challenges that do not belong to a single country.  These are "problems without passports." Check summer 2010 offerings http://college.usc.edu/problems-without-passports/ .

Cambridge Summer Programme
Applications for the 2010 Cambridge Summer Programme are available now.  Full details will be available online  next week on http://college.usc.edu/Cambridge-Program/. Applications are due by January 22, 2010
The USC Cambridge Programme is geared toward students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a continuous love of learning.  This program is named in honor of Dean Joan Metcalf Schaefer, Dean of Women Emerita, of the University of Southern California.

The International Summer School in Cambridge, England, offers students an excellent opportunity to study British literature, history, economics, poetry, arts and government, and to examine the background of modern Britain and its rich and diverse cultural heritage.  Students live in Cambridge Colleges and have the opportunity to visit and appreciate some of England’s major historic sites.   Students may earn 4 elective credits by taking two courses and completing a comprehensive essay in each course.
